Why do organizations need a coach?

According to an article in the April 2006 issue of the Inc. Magazine (pp 86) coaches focus on one thing: improving your performance as a leader. A good coach will make sure you meet your commitments. Executives at large corporations have long relied on coaches. But entrepreneurs and smaller business need them even more because they’re so isolated.

Organizations are made up of people. They thrive when people view their jobs as responsibilities and take ownership of their actions. Creating an environment that raises morale, enthusiasm and energy level of employees is the key to success of any organization. A coach focuses on all these and more.

Businesses are living things. They are constantly changing and evolving. Many organizations have difficulty managing change because of resistance from many constituencies. When this happens, organizations get stuck. A coach helps manage change.

What is a coach?

The coach is:

  • A catalyst – Facilitates and motivates creative thinking
  • A referee – Promotes constructive disagreements and consensus building
  • A cheerleader – Keeps pulling for you all the time
  • Your inner voice – Wants nothing more than your success

"A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, and has you see what you don't want to see, so that you can be what you have always known you can be." - Tom Landry

How does a coach help an organization?

Every organization hits brick walls as it grows. This causes disruptions and turmoil. These brick walls are rooted in the following three areas:

  • Leadership
  • Infrastructure
  • Market

When the organization hit these brick walls they get stuck. A coach prepares the organization to minimize the impact from hitting these brick walls so that the organization stays on its path of sustained profitable growth.

Why do organizations get stuck?

Organizations get stuck for many reasons but some of the more important reasons are lack of clarity, lack of alignment, lack of focus and lack of accountability.

What can organizations do about it?

Organizations must improve clarity and alignment at all levels. They must create long-term strategic thinking but focus on short-term execution. They must create a rhythm to work on important things as opposed to urgent things. Although these are simple concepts, many organizations struggle with them.

What is the answer?

Organizations have to create discipline and change certain habits. Unfortunately, most organizations struggle with the change when they do it themselves. They, therefore, engage an independent person who acts as their coach and advisor to effect the change.

Does everyone need a coach?

Everyone needs a person who is their trusted advisor and will hear their problems and give them unbiased advise. Coaching is a stable supportive relationship where a coach and the organization form a partnership built on trust, mutual respect and discipline that effects behavioral change.

Is a coach a consultant?

No. A coach is not a consultant. A coach helps bring the best out of you by creating behavioral changes that affect the outcomes in a positive manner. Unlike a consultant, the coach is there with you in the trenches, helping you fight the battle while maintaining your focus toward your vision.

How can a coach tell me how to improve my business when he/she does not know my business?

The power of the coach comes from being an outsider and not knowing what is inside the box. The coach's strength is not in knowing your business as a specialist but to help you think beyond limits of imagination and work with you to clarify, crystallize and implement your thinking.

What can a coach tell me that I do not already know?

The coach will take you where you don't want to go on your own. We all live in our areas of comfort and convince ourselves that we know everything. Truth is actually the opposite. For business executives to know what they don't know and doing something about it can be valuable. Also knowing what they should stop doing can be equally valuable if not more.

Does the coach have a magic bullet?

Coach does not have a magic bullet, you do. However, you may not know that and may not have the gun that can fire the magic bullet. The coach can help you find that bullet and create that gun that will fire the magic bullet.

How does it work?

The coach conducts a series of meetings to drive change within the organization. He/she utilizes his/her experiences to motivate people to think and act differently. A rigorous application of this approach makes people become good at identifying the right things and doing them at the right time.

A good coach must have

  • Experience – successes and failures
  • Proven process
  • Excellent meeting facilitation skills

How are results achieved?

Results are achieved through the efforts of the organization. This requires commitment, focus, rhythm and accountability that leads to behavioral changes and enables people achieve specifically agreed to outcomes. A coach empowers and encourages growth through personal commitment, applied discipline and practice and emotional strength. The coach also provides a confidential and challenging environment for constructive feedback that assists the people to improve their own performance.

Coaching is too expensive and my business cannot afford it.

Coaching may appear expensive on the surface but it more than pays for itself in the long run when the business starts to deliver the results that may otherwise not be possible.
